History of the Man Eaters Camp and Man Eating
Lions of Tsavo
Man Eaters Camp is named after the two man-eating
lions that devoured countless workers during the
building of the famous ‘Lunatic Line' - The Kenya -
uganda Railway. 140 workers were killed by maneless
male lions while constructing a railwayline over the
Tsavo River in 1898. The lions were huge in size and
measured nine feet six inches from the tip of his
nose to the tip of his tail and stood three feet
eleven and a half inches high. the Lions were laer
killed by colonel John Patterson.
Man Eaters Camp is located at the original site
where all these happened. The site’s history dates
back to colonial days during the construction of the
Tsavo Bridge.
